Florida Moves to Support Veterans and Patients with New Medical Marijuana Bill
In a unanimous 110-0 vote, the Florida House of Representatives has passed House Bill 555, an important step forward for medical marijuana access in the state.
The bill waives the fees associated with issuing, renewing, or replacing medical marijuana identification cards for veterans who have received an honorable discharge. To qualify, veterans would simply need to provide their DD-214 form as proof of service.
In addition to helping veterans, the bill benefits the broader patient community by extending the validity of all medical marijuana ID cards from one year to two years. This change aims to reduce costs and ease the renewal burden for patients and caregivers across Florida.
Florida first legalized medical marijuana in 2016 through Amendment 2. As of April 8, 2025, there are over 907,000 registered medical marijuana patients in the state, according to the Florida Department of Health.
If signed into law, House Bill 555 is set to take effect on July 1, 2025.
This move reflects growing support for improving access to medical cannabis and honoring the needs of Florida’s veterans and patients.
